I know its a couple weeks old but TF2 has gone free to play. No more harassing Valve for tournament passes! The only downside is F2P accounts most likely wont have updated gear and would get roflstomped by the veterans. Nothing an old fashioned standard-only match can fix.

as far as I know the f2p account will be supported along with the premium accounts. It is recommended to put $5 in your steam wallet and become a premium member to get better drops.
